Blessed with two hands, I now live in constant insecurity about my two instruments. Text on the left, Image on the right, never fully confident in their ability in times of crisis. I create an image, inspired by text, then write text as an anti-failure mechanism for the image. This reserve parachute of text is not part of the art itself, but something secondary. Ironically, this protective measure is entirely obsolete as those who do not ‘get’ the work will move on entirely before the reserve chute triggers. Layering up condoms to prevent unwanted transmission, like a paranoid hypersexual. Does the friction between the primary and secondary means of communication create a tear in the fabric of art itself? Double durexing out of fear of a tear, a lack of communication; however, in double-bagging do I create the rip myself? Before friction between both layers has even occurred, a rip is destined to transpire. Does this response to feelings of precarity create the exact conditions I initially feared? Logic would tell you to take off one condom, chuck one to the side, do whatever you can not to double-bag. How can a person listen to logic when they are so incessantly paranoid of a hole in the canvas of every Durex they buy? Logic… Fuck logic.
The only illogically logical approach is to separate each condom in private, sewing them back together to form a new, carbonised mode of communication before returning the art into public view. Imatext, Textage: the amalgamation of my two friends and foes into one entity. Either in their isolated form is beyond imagination; each has no choice but to emerge in response to the other. Attempting to resolve the problem of the unwed form only generates a new fragility. Instability is a natural byproduct of these contradicting batons of communication, only negated by a wishfully covert latex seam binding the two instruments together. Two competing mediums, forced to unite under one roof. Will this new relationship between text and image be long-lasting and fruitful, or is it just an erotic, adulterous, late night scandal?
